I tried the "extra añejo" variety of this one (reposado is available also), seriously y have to say that if you like strong flavours, this is a you must try tequila. The smell is from oak and spicy, it smells similar to a very old rum or a cognac, in the mouth, this tequila gives you what it promise, an intense flavour, complex tasting where participates the caramel, agave, smoke, oak and a little bit of vanilla. The final is good but not very long, this tequila tastes and have a personality as his name suggest "a great old". I tried to mix it with cola and i needed a little bit to make a strong and spicy tasting "charro negro".

Even in México is hard to find, but if you have the chance to buy this "artesanal" Tequila of one of the best Tequila houses you can't let the oportunity to pass.

Smells very good and deep (woody to me), the taste is smooth and well balanced so give you the chance to feel it rolling in your mouth for a few seconds. Large and woody/carameled final obteined after 6 years aging (not common aging in tequilas).

Highly Recommended.

Altamente recomendado.

Aroma: Notes of cinnamon and dark spices with vanilla are the most pronounced, but balanced with subtle hints of agave and wood.
Initial taste: Sweet, but a bit of a let-down from the nose.
Body: The agave is more apparent in the body than it is in the nose, which is interesting. Caramel, vanilla, spice still linger against a very slight wood background.
Finish: Long, complex, and very enjoyable. Surprisingly agave-forward that leaves a lasting impressions of vanilla, spice, earth, smoke, oak, and a little dark fruit.

I thought this was good, though the nose is so good that it's a bit deceptive. I think this tequila should be better than it was. I'll try another bottle from a different batch. Otherwise, this is a solid A.

Love the packaging too.

El Gran Viejo Anejo NOM 1109 Tasted on 4/30/07 at 11:50pm. I opened this bottle, which cost me $116, at my home and tasted it in a Riedel glass. While this bottle has a unique design, it is the tequilas quality versus price that makes this great. In my opinion, this tequila is worth far more than $116. With a golden color, this tequila has intense aromas of floral, vanilla, and caramel. Other aromas include moderate fruit and a hint of spice. The tequila has a medium mouth feel and on the first sip is very sweet with a hint of bitterness. El Gran Viejo has numerous arrays of flavors due to its 3 years of aging. Intense flavors of caramel and floral are followed by moderate notes of agave, fruit, and vanilla. With a long duration of flavor, tastes of mild spice with a hint of earth and smoke bring this tequila to a numbing finish. El Gran Viejo anejo has received the rating of 94 points out of 100.
