Casa Cuervo is a bit of a mystery to me. Of course many tequila purists will tell you that anything associated with NOM 1122 or Cuervo is bad, but they actually make some quality juices. The best seller (Cuervo Especial) is pretty awful, but some other brands like Centenario and Maestro Tequilero/Dobel are solid. This is my first sip of anything from the Tenampa Azul brand, but I know that it is often used by tequila bars as the house mixer (for 100% agave tequilas) and I've had some good margaritas made with it. Let's check it out.

Aroma: A bit of grassy agave and hint of earth and ripe fruit (pear/apricot). There's also an astringent scent that is common in tequilas that are made/processed quickly. Slightly metallic.

Initial Taste: A strange flavor. A bit of agave, fruit and a medicinal taste. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it's a bit like a spicy cough syrup. It sweet and spicy, but it has a fruity and metallic aspect to it.

Body: An earthy and peppery body. The sweetness is pretty much gone as it moves along your palate. Medium-thin body.

Finish: A spicy pepper linger with a bit of alcohol burn as well. The burn stays with you a while, the flavors fade fairly quickly.

In all honesty, while I don't love this as a sipper, I can see why it is used as a 100% agave mixer and with good results. It's a bit too hot to be sipped enjoyably, but the flavors within lend it to being a nice and well priced tequila to throw into a margarita. It's not great, but when considering that it's priced like a mixto, you can certainly do worse. I'll definitely be mixing the rest of this bottle...
